Manage videos
Edit a video's details, chapters, thumbnail and transcript, replace its file, and move videos to Trash.
Each video has a details page where you edit what viewers see and get its embed code. Open it from Videos by selecting the video's title or Details & chapters.
Title, description and thumbnail
- Title: required, up to 255 characters.
- Description: optional, up to 5,000 characters.
- Thumbnail: under Auto-captured · pick one, choose one of the frames OctaVideo captured during encoding, or select Upload image to use your own. Frames appear once encoding finishes.
Your edits to the title, description, thumbnail and chapters are saved together with Save changes. If you leave the page with unsaved changes, the console asks first.
Your server can also update the title and description: see Update video details.
Chapters
Chapters split a long video into named parts. Viewers see them in the player's chapters menu and, if you turn it on in Player, as segments on the progress bar.
You can add chapters once the video is encoded:
- Select Add chapter and type a start time (such as
2:10or1:02:05) and a title. - Click the timeline to add a chapter at that moment, or drag a chapter's marker to move it.
- Import .vtt loads chapters from a WebVTT chapters file; Export WebVTT downloads them.
Rows stay in time order. A video can have up to 200 chapters, each starting after the one before it: two chapters can't start at the same time, and a chapter can't start after the video ends.
Through the API, Set video chapters replaces the whole list at once.
Transcript
When a video is transcribed, its transcript shows on the details page:
- Correct any line in place; each correction is saved at once.
- Find in transcript highlights the lines that contain a word.
- Download transcript as
.vtt,.srtor.txt.
A video without a transcript shows Transcribe. See Transcription.
File & delivery
This card shows the Video ID (with a copy button), Duration, Renditions, Protection (for example ClearKey + OTP) and Views (30 d). Use the video ID when you request an OTP or call the API.
Get embed code
Get embed code opens the embed panel for this video:
- Ready-to-paste iframe: no server, valid for 1 month; extending keeps the same code.
- Server OTP per page view: the Custom Backend way, most secure, needs your server.
See Embedding.
Replace file
Replace file uploads a new file for the same video, for example to fix a mistake in a lesson. After you confirm, the upload runs in the Uploads panel.
The video keeps its ID, embeds, chapters, transcript and statistics. The new file is encoded again, which uses encoding minutes, and the current file keeps playing until the new one is Ready.
Trash
To remove videos, select them on Videos, then Delete… and Move to Trash.
Videos in Trash stop playing on your sites straight away.
Trash keeps videos for 30 days, then deletes them for good. Open Trash from Videos to see each video with the time left, and select Restore to put one back in Videos.
Collections
Collections group videos of a library, for example the lessons of one course. Today you create them and add videos through the API: see Create a collection and Add videos to a collection. A collection can be used to list its videos with List videos.
